WhoBetaaltWhat: easily share your bill

It is a regularly recurring question after, for example, a dinner or an evening out: who pays the bill, and how can it possibly be distributed fairly? Thanks to the WieBetaaltWat app, you can keep a clear balance of group expenses, which you can settle quickly. Useful! Sharing your account with it works as follows.

A winter sports holiday, a weekend away or a snack and drink at the sports club: in various situations it can be necessary or useful to keep track of mutual expenses. Although you can put together an Excel sheet and possibly share it, it is much easier to use an app that the whole group has access to. Everyone can therefore immediately see which expenses have been incurred or add expenses themselves with any explanation or proof, such as a receipt.

One of the most useful apps for this purpose is WieBetaaltWat. This allows each group member to indicate what he or she has paid; then the differences can easily be settled. There are a lot of tricks hidden in it. We are happy to show you how it works!

1 WhoPaysWhat to install

WhoPaysWhat is available for Android, iPhone and iPad. The fact that the app is available for multiple platforms is obviously important; the more people can participate. Both apps also receive a very good rating in the respective app stores. You can also use WieBetaaltWat via a browser on www.wiebetaaltwat.nl.

After installing and opening the app, you can create a new account or log in with an existing account. You can then activate a payment method. This can be a bank account (iDeal) or your PayPal account. You can skip this step; at a later time you can add a payment method by going to your account page via the menu.

2 Create list

The first step is to create a list. This can be an event, such as a holiday, lunch, night out or taxi ride. But you can also make a list for a group of people you often go out with. When creating a list, you can also choose a currency. There are about 150 currencies available; useful if you are going to a non-euro country.

Then you invite other participants. This can be done via WhatsApp or Messenger, for example, but also by text message or e-mail. You can also manually add a participant with their email address. The person concerned will then receive an invitation link.

After making a list you can share it with other users.

3 Track spending

Any member of a list can add, change or remove expenses. This can also be expenses of another participant. To do this, after opening the list, go to the tab Transactions and click on the plus sign. Enter the amount and a description. Also indicate who paid. You can optionally add an image as ‘evidence’, for example a receipt from a restaurant. Below you enter the distribution key.

Expenses can of course be divided equally, simply by pressing Everyone 1x button, but you can also choose a custom key. Thanks to the offline mode, expenses can also be entered in places without coverage.

When entering the amount you will see an icon of a calculator; a helper to perform a simple calculation. It is of course possible that money is added to the group, for example the refunded deposit for a holiday home or a deposit for the beer crates. You can simply enter such items as a negative amount.

4 Check balance

On the balance you can see what the list participants owe.

When you go to the tab balance you can easily see what the list participants owe. Of course, you should check this every now and then. If you alternately pay for the drinks, for example, in practice settlement will probably rarely be necessary. But if it’s ‘skewed’, this can be useful.

By calculating the list, you can see per participant whether he or she has to pay something, and in this case to whom, or receives something in return, and from whom. The settlements will be emailed to all participants. The debts can be paid via iDeal or PayPal. After a settlement, all balances are set to zero.

You can see this when you go to the tab balance is going. In addition, the previous transactions are archived, as in the tab Transactions will be visible. You can still view the previous (settled) transactions. You can then continue entering transactions on the relevant list until the next settlement is required.

5 Check settlements

If there has been a settlement, you can do this on the settlements check again. You will then see the state of settlements for your specific situation. For example, if you still receive money from someone, you will see it here. You can also view the entire settlement, including the costs incurred.

Suppose the payment is not made, then you can possibly send a payment request from the app to the participant in question. If a participant has paid you, you can then mark the relevant settlement as paid. In the overview of settlements, the message that you are even will appear.
