Lately there has been a lot to do about WhatsApp, so many people decide to switch to another communication service. Whether that is a useful move is still the question – in Europe you as a consumer are reasonably well protected.
A common alternative to WhatsApp is the Russian communication service Telegram. With this app you can chat and call, send photos and videos, use stickers and GIFs and determine the interface yourself. A great chat application, therefore, regardless of the privacy concerns that exist. If you want to switch to Telegram from WhatsApp, we will explain how to do that and what to keep in mind in this article.
Create Telegram account
Telegram is a chat service available on all major platforms including Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. When you have downloaded the application for one of the platforms, you can create an account. To do that, you need an active phone number. You must also confirm that phone number by entering a verification code sent to that number. You cannot continue without confirming your phone number. Once you have done this, enter your name and we can start.
Within Telegram you now open a conversation with the person whose conversation you want to transfer from one app to another. We will come back to that later. The person must of course use Telegram. Now we can start transferring.
Back to WhatsApp
To import the chats from WhatsApp to Telegram, you need to export those chats first. You do this by opening WhatsApp and then a conversation. At the top right, tap the menu, go to More and press Export chat. You will now be given the option to add or not all media in the group. Choose yes here if you want to take everything with you to Telegram.
A submenu will now appear at the bottom where you can indicate to which app you can transfer the just exported data. In this menu you choose the conversation you just created in Telegram. If that conversation is not listed, open Telegram and select the chat manually. Telegram now asks if you want to import the chat. You want that, of course.
It will take a good few minutes for the process to complete. Especially when you also transfer media. In the meantime, keep the app active and open. The steps are largely the same for groups. You can choose to add the messages to an existing group, but you can also create a new group for this.
